Storytelling Philosophy

This is an essay by Sam about the show’s approach to stories.

We believe that narrative form and nonfiction storytelling is a powerful medium for building connections, demystifying esoteric concepts, and seeking social change.

  • Garth Mullins

    HOST & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

    Garth Mullins is adrug user activist and award-winning radio documentarian. This is Garth’s second overdose crisis. He used injection heroin for over a decade and is now on methadone. He is a member of the BC Association of People on Opiate Maintenance and the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users and is also a trade union organizer and musician.

  • Sam Fenn

    SENIOR PRODUCER

    Sam Fenn is a documentarian, journalist, and musician. Sam’s work has aired on 99% Invisible, Life of the Law, The Doc Project, and Podcast Playlist and has won awards from the Third Coast/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, The Sidney Hillman Foundation, the Jack Webster Foundation, the New York Festivals Radio Awards, and the National Campus and Community Radio Association.

  • Alex De Boer

    PRODUCER

    Alex De Boer is a nonfiction storyteller based on Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh territories (Vancouver, BC). Her work focuses on BC history, politics and drug policy. Alex’s original documentaries have been featured in DOXA Documentary Film Festival, CBC’s The Doc Project and CANADALAND.

  • Lisa Hale

    PRODUCER

    Lisa Hale is a freelance reporter and producer based in Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh territories (Vancouver, BC). Her work has aired on CBC's Dispatches and Ideas. She has been a producer on several documentaries for Retro Report and The New York Times. Her written work has appeared in Nedelo and The Tyee. She takes naloxone and a microphone with her wherever she goes.

  • Alex Betsos

    RESEARCH & PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

    Alex Betsos is a qualitative researcher and drug policy activist. They work as part of Jade Boyd and Ryan McNeil’s research team at the BC Centre on Substance Use and have an M.Sc. in social science research methods from the University of Amsterdam. They were a board member of Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy for 7 years, the co-founder/current board member of Karmik, a nightlife and festival harm reduction group, and is currently an International Working Group member for Youth RISE. Known to make bad posts on Twitter.

  • Alexander Kim

    SOUND DESIGNER & AUDIO EDITOR

    Alexander Kim is a sound designer, audio editor, photographer, and award-winning journalist based in Vancouver. He has been reporting on drugs in Vancouver since the long winter of 2016.

  • James Ash

    SOUND DESIGNER & MUSICIAN

    James Ash is a drummer and sound designer who grew up playing punk rock on the prairies. James made his way west where he continues to work at the intersection of sound and community. Music and sound continues to be a place of refuge and learning for James and he is passionate about building accessible music programs together with community. James makes original score for the award winning podcast Crackdown and is part of the Yard Tales Podcast team where he contributes original music and sound design. James plays drums in a number of local bands and makes music in interesting acoustic spaces every chance he gets. He lives on on the unceded territories of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations with his wonderful family. https://www.jamesjohnash-musicsounddesign.org/
